Using HDMI to charge the device

Problem:
When you're using the device with external monitor, you are probably doing things like watching a movie or browsing the net through wifi or 3G network, which drain the battery.

It would be great to be able to plug the device to the monitor, do what ever you want, and leave with a fully charged battery.

Solution #1:
HDMI supplies a minimum of 55mA current on the 5V line, but most source devices on the market today provide significantly more current on the 5V line than the HDMI specification requires. (http://www.hdmi.org/learningcenter/kb.aspx?c=13#42)

Use this current to charge the battery while the HDMI is connected.

Brainstorm proposal

I meant connecting the device to the external screen using the HDMI cable and charging the device using the same connection.

you cant charge it through the the 3.5mm jack socket?

you use the usb port for that. and the usb port cannot be used for the tv out?

In fact where there is a HDMI port in the device to use a HDMI cable? I don't have one in my, or then I don't recognize it.

This brainstorm is listed under devices. It is a hardware proposal, which is why it isn't applicable to any current devices. You won't be able to do it on your current devices. Don't even try.

The idea is, that when you plug your future device (with HDMI out) to a monitor, you don't have to get a separate charger to keep the device juiced up, but it will charge itself from the HDMI connection instead.

None of the Nokia Internet Tablets (770, N800, N810) or the N900 have an HDMI port. The N900 has a dual use 3.5mm audio jack that can put out analog NTSC or PAL video if you can get it to work right. It would be really nice to have micro-HDMI port on a future device, but as yet, it is not an option on any of the current Nokia Maemo devices.

N8 has a HDMI out, so it is quite probable that the next Maemo and Meego devices have that as well. See here
