multi partition SD card
Just got a 16 gig SD card and I am looking to check out some other operating systems on my n900, NitDroid and Meego later on when more functions are available.
I'm a bit hazy on the partitioning of the SD card. I found the guide on the NitDroid wiki: http://wiki.nitdroid.com/index.php?title=N900-install I am wondering what extra steps I would need to add another 2 gb partition for the meego OS?. Is 2 gbs even enough for Meego? Does multiboot install with NitDroid automatically, or do I have to still do that manually? Thanks for any advice, |
Re: multi partition SD card
So i tried to follow the instructions in the wiki and nothing seems to happen while partitioning.
i type in the sudo gainroot then umount /dev/mmcblk1p1 and i get unmount: not found if I try any of the other lines I press enter and nothing seems to happen. The courser just hops to the next line blinking. and I tried out making a 3rd partition after that by adding to what was in the wiki: sfdisk -uM /dev/mmcblk1 << EOF ,<YOUR NUMBER IN MB>,C ,<YOUR NUMBER IN MB>,D ,,L ,, EOF umount /dev/mmcblk1p1 mkdosfs /dev/mmcblk1p1 mke2fs -D Meego -j -m0 /dev/mmcblk1p2 mke2fs -L NITDroid -j -m0 /dev/mmcblk1p3 But like everything else, it didnt seem to do anything. Any ideas? Thanks. |
Re: multi partition SD card
alright so i kept typing unmount for some reason.. no wonder xterm was telling me i was stupid.
so nex i try: Code:
Nokia-N900:~# sfdisk -uM /dev/mmcblk1 << EOF Code:
Checking that no-one is using this disk right now ... lol now what am i doing worng? |
Re: multi partition SD card
Try it with out these <> when you write your numbers, as i remember thy should not be there to make it work ;)

Re: multi partition SD card
Yup was just going to post that i did it without the <>
then after a reboot I was able to make up the other 2 partitions with: Code:
mkdosfs /dev/mmcblk1p1 right now waiting for the long download. Thanks for letting me think allowed here on the forums.:D |
Re: multi partition SD card
Perhaps it's easier to partition the SD card in Ubuntu using gparted (especially if you want multiple partitions)? I did that when I was trying Easy Debian.
Don't have clue how to this in Windows. |
Re: multi partition SD card
Wow, this is incredibly refreshing for this forum, someone asking a question in a polite way and then giving it a go entirely by themselves and asking the right questions in the right way when stuck.
Well done, no seriously I'm not being sarcastic, this forum really does need more people like you (I'm not forgetting all of the insanely talented people here, thank you as well). |
Re: multi partition SD card
I am slightly less talented. So i tend to get stuck on the small things. ;)
I did look up partitioning an SD card with windows. They wanted you to mess with the registry and try and tell windows that the SD card wasnt a removable card... seemed easier to just mess with it in Xtem.. whats the worst that could happen? I would have to learn how to flash my n900? heh. |
