odd question to ask
 

guys, just out of interest, got an odd question, after i updated to 1.2(using OTA method), it looks likes the "World Clock" setting for the other cities are still there. is this right? I did think updating firmware, all user data will be wiped out, correct? or is there any "pre-loaded" settings(like DC in US) after updating in the world clock setting?

updating OTA does not wipe your settings or anything
everything remains intact

thanks for your answer. i understand OTA is different from flashing with image. however does it mean using OTA to update, the user didn't have to backup data like contacts, sms? also anyone knows which part of the system/os will be replaced during OTA? all the kernel? or just part of it?

I think the OTA update just updates as little as possible. If a system file doesn't have any changes in the update, the OTA update doesn't change that file.

The backup thing - you CAN backup stuff, and it's recommended. When I updated right around the time PR1.2 came out, I didn't back up and everything went fine. HOWEVER, there is still a small possibility that something will get screwed up mid-update, and you'll have to reflash - which is why people recommend backing up before the OTA updates. However, if the OTA update goes right, you'll never have to use the backup, since everything should still be fine.

Now, the Kernel thing is more complicated - as I said, only a few system files are changed - the ones that have updates made. However, if you are using the Power Kernel, or any other custom kernel, the updated files might overwrite better or different parts of the custom kernels, which are meant to work with the stock kernel, instead of the custom kernel, so the update can screw up the custom kernels, specifically because it replaces only parts.

thanks for all these information. i wonder how to find out what version of kernel is running? and how to find out if there is Power Kernel or any customised kernel installed?

If you didn't specifically install the power kernel, it's running stock. In fact, since you updated to PR1.2, I call tell you for sure, regardless, it's now running stock. (The kernel was replaced in 1.2, so if you want power kernel you need to reinstall it after the update.)

What woody said is true, however, just for general knowledge, you can install one of a few programs that tell you what the kernel version is.

Off the top of my head, Health Check and Conky both tell you what kernel you're running.

I would tell you what to use to get the Kernel version through command-line, but i don't know. It's probably "cat /proc/sys/kernel/(something)"... I tried "cat /proc/sys/kernel/version" - doesn't give anything that looks like a kernel version to me, but *shrug*. Poke around in /proc/sys/, using the cat command on everything in there. cat doesn't change anything, so you won't screw up your system if you don't type anything stupid, but you should eventually find it.

If you open the X Terminal and type:

uname -a

it will print the version of the kernel you are using.

Much appreciated. (Actually, just tested uname -a is the most informative I found - however, uname -r will be enough to get the actual kernel version number, as I understand it. The -a tag gives you all of the options of the uname command at once.)

Anyway, like I said, this is appreciated. I am always happy to learn a new shell command (utter Linux newb when I got the N900, have been learning things in correlation with necessity).
