Maemo>MeeGo & Nokia Siemens/Intel/Google TV/Android
 

Maemo was a Linux Tablet OS, with version 5 cellular support and now with merger with MeeGo becoming a general thin client device OS. MeeGo doesn’t specifically list a Tablet as a device; Netbook covers device n900 as a Netbook class device.

So, what is the future for the Maemo Tablet device developers as related to the merger into MeeGo, Nokia’s partnership with Intel? Intel is a partner with Google TV, the Android based competing platform for “Connected TV”

While Smart Phones have been around for a while, Smart TV has been around for a long time in the form of HTPC, a concept never embraced by consumers on any mainstream level. So you may think the Intel / Google venture will also fail to gain traction but that would be incorrect, Smart TV will soon be a faster growing and a bigger market than apps for Smart Phones. Consider that the Smart TV will run a Tablet OS in the Set Top Box, the Tablet interface provided by wireless display that replaces the traditional TV remote. This is where Google TV is headed and where MeeGo is headed and maybe NokiaSiemens Ubiquity TV is headed.

Maemo QT developers are the primary people with a future in Smart TV as that expertise is key to future TV Tablet OS with a secondary video out to a big screen. This is going to explode on MeeGo.

For now we ain’t got the right hardware platform yet, what say you?

Yet more stuff I had no idea I needed :) But I think most TVs already are running some OS to control the various DSPs in there, even Linux. The TV is only the screen, to make it work you need cable or sat, and those boxes are already pretty "smart", so why does the TV need to be smart?

I think MeeGo has shown more tablet devices in the wild in preproduction form than any other form factor. I don't think the tablet mission for MeeGo is lost at all, and may be its sweet spot in its beginning. In fact, the first commercial MeeGo device is the WeTab, a tablet as well.

Intel is a partner with GoogleTV as a hardware partner, but that isn't shocking. They are hardware partners with half the world, honestly. There will be plenty of companies looking for a more robust platform, and will see Google as a competitor on its YouTube and music front. There is room for more opportunities, and MeeGo does so much more.

The hardware is the job of the hardware manufacturers, and they're working in features little by little. Samsung already has an app platform on their TVs, and as MeeGo gains tractions in smartphones, you'll see more TVs willing to use it as a platform as well. It wouldn't be hard to have DLNA between tablets and TVs in weeks, so this stuff is just around the corner. Its still early.

The future OS for TV is Tablet based but Maemo lacks understanding it's current substantial advantage in the Smart TV space, Android is a cell phone OS, Google TV is an embarrassment to all involved in it's current state.

To own the Smart TV market is a great advantage also in the Smart Phone market, its an integration play and opportunity for controlling standards.

For TVs the OS is not the critical part, it is the content. Whoever gets the content (currently Apple)will win no matter how crappy their interface is

No doubt content is king, good point. Currently Hulu has the bulk of quality content for TV and Netflix for movies on subscription, Apple is not a viable issue (so due to it’s lacking Steve calls that product a Hobby). However, the business model and platform for advertising revolves around the roll-out of Smart TV but it cannot really be “Smart” unless it has a smart platform to run on involving the OS support. It looks like it may have been made with Qt; it lacks key features (blocked by patent) but is a good concept demo.
