PC supplies Internet to N900 over bluetooth?
 

Hi all,

I am running OpenSUSE 11.3 on my laptop which is connected to the internet using wifi. Is it possible to use this internet on N900 via bluetooth.

Please note i am talking opposite of normal tethering, ie i dont want to use modem of N900.

I'm not sure if that's possible but if you want to share the internet connection through your laptop you might have to setup your laptop as "ad-hoc" connection???

No, i cant do that as i am using wifi to get internet in the first place on the laptop. And i dont think a wlan card can be both a transmitter and receiver at the same time.

I think this is technically possible, there are plenty of examples around doing the opposite with a linux desktop pulling data over bluetooth from the tablet. There's no reason you should not be able to set up a PPP server on your desktop and then establish a DUN attachment from your N900 but it is certainly more work than I would want to do.

Did you consider doing USB networking like the developers do? Should be easier I think.

But the dumb question is, if you have a wireless router serving wifi going to your laptop, why not just use the same wifi router to serve data to your phone directly? Do you not have permission to access the wireless network directly with your N900?

Aside from the obvious suggestion of using the N900's wifi, I'd suggest using a dummy plugin over PAN with the Maemo PC Connectivity Suite as outlined here:

I already have usb networking working. But that means i loose mobility. The wireless signal here is quite weak (in a hotel room) so N900 drops it quite frequently. The laptop owing to bigger antennae maintain a stable connection.

I do have the dummy plugin installed. I am on stock kernel without iptables, will PAN work with this?

If your wlan card supports hostmode then you probably can.

Sorry, I skipped over a little in my haste(it all made sense in my head):

Install the host-pc-connectivity package on your opensuse machine as outlined here:

Then, setup both the n900 and the pc to connect to each other as shown here:

After this it should work, although if you wish to activate it manually follow the linux section instructions here:

As far I know it should work with the stock kernel, but I've never had to try it myself.
