4g

Can the N900/Maemo 1.3 support 4G? Anyone?

Re: 4g

of course not, Maemo/PR 1.3 has nothing to do with it , its a hardware limitation :(

Re: 4g

The N900 gets the super high speed connection on T-Mobile that they used to call 3.5g, but have recently decided to start calling 4g.

Re: 4g

Is there a phone that can handle 100 mbps yet? That'd be the first true 4g capable phone.

We need to find a better "battery" first.

They are basically using WIMAX dont know why they are calling it a 4G may be similar story to what Tmobile USA is doing.
WIMAX as far as I know is not based on GSM but on CDMA which N900 does not have the hardware capability nor does the software/os Maemo5 and Meego 1.1 (also 1.2) does at the moment.

First, what is 4G? Wikipedia says the standard isn't completely finished.
What frequency bands it requires?
Comparison:

HTC Evo 4G
Connectivity
Dual-band CDMA/EVDO Rev. A (800 1900 MHz)
2.5 to 2.7 GHz WiMAX 802.16e[2]

Nokia N900
Connectivity
GSM 850/900/1800/1900
GPRS 107/64 kbps DL/UL
EDGE 296/178 kbps DL/UL
UMTS 900/1700/2100
WCDMA 384/384 kbps DL/UL
HSPA 10/2 Mbps DL/UL

Nokia doesn't have 800 MHz, but it has 850, 900, 1700, and 2100 MHz.
Considering there isn't much difference between 800 and 850 it might be possible, but it's highly unlikely.

Nokia doesn't have WiMAX.
Considering that WiMAX uses 2.* GHz frequency, it might be possible to implement through Bluetooth chip, but it's highly unlikely.

Overall, Nokia N900 has much better connectivity than HTC Evo 4G, but it cannot keep up with new not-released standards unless low-level changes in modules' drivers are implemented.

EDIT: Most likely, hardware changes are needed to implement any of those additional bands. Like, finding a new cellular chip which is backwards compatible with N900's and has some new functionality, and replacing the old one with the new one.

EDIT: With USB-On-The-Go beta version released, you could use USB stick for connection. Or mini SDIO WiMAX card, if you can put it into microSD card slot.
