Re: no official meego for n900 from nokia
I don't think no official release is a big issue. Many here have long been using their N900 in many "unofficial" ways, just because it's linux. :D

Re: no official meego for n900 from nokia
IMO, this is just Nokia's usual communication style. They talk about it through their developer channels, but they will not publicly announce (denounce?) or acknowledge it.
As for the question of 'Will MeeGo be available (officially) on n900?', i think that's a fair question because it actually seems to be the norm when you look at the competitors: - iPhone 3G (2008) and 3GS (2009) are still getting iOS 4.2 upgrade. - Many current 1.6 (2009) Android phones are getting 2.2. Ok, the Nokia defendors will probably say 'b-b-b-but it's not a smartphone'... to which I will paint an even starker comparison with the 'pc' market: Perpetually continuous upgrades are available to all major OSes... the OSS ones are available for free (various flavours of linux and bsd).. and the commercial ones are offered at a discount (Windows, OSX, solaris, etc). They all would run on machines that are as old as 5+ yrs or more. |

Symbian is now the same as Android and ios where there is now only Symbian(not S^3, S^4 etc) that will get updates. Anyways this months old news that got huge thread about already. |
Re: no official meego for n900 from nokia
Yes, it's a fair question because the N900 isn't some ancient device, it's almost as current as you can get. There is a certain kind of trust that exists between hardware manufacturers and users -- "we won't hang you out to dry if you are current". In general, many N900 users already felt hung out to dry because of things like flash support suddenly seeming to vanish. So, "are you going to hang us out to dry with Meego too?" is a legitimate question.
I think that Nokia has basically assured us that in some form or other Meego will be available for N900 users. It's just that Nokia communications are so smarmy in general that users don't trust vague assurances. In fact, they would prefer that assurances from Nokia would be written in blood, and even then there would be doubters. |

But, we all know that those are just lines they give us. (Excuses?) If Nokia wants to, there's no real obstacle for them to bestow a proper MeeGo 1.1 (or whathever) on the n900. I think that's what's really annoying most users here. And to continue on the numbers game: How long has the n900 been available in the market before they cease maemo's development and announced MeeGo? IMHO, the n900 has not peaked yet. I'll let these numbers speak for themselves: PR1.1 PR1.2 PR1.3 |
