Hi, i am planning to upgrade my N900 to PR1.3 using nokia software updater. Before i go ahead, i wanted to know if i will loose my contacts and conversations after the update? And will i need to install all the apps again? Thanks.

If you use NSU to update then you'll need to reinstall all your applications. Your contacts and conversations should be retained though (I'd advise making a backup anyway).

Is there any reason you can't do the update OTA instead though, as that'll save reinstalling everything?

Some how my N900 fails to connect to my Wifi network when my laptop and PS3 can. So NSU is my only option currently. Is there some other way to update? Maybe download the update file and transfer it to my N900? Thanks.

use the wiki for updating your firmware..

You can download the firmware files and flash your phone with the flasher tool.

You will loose all data so please backup all the data before you flash your phone.

If you can't use wifi or 3g, then it's possible to use USB networking - this can be quite a bit of work to setup though. Aside from that, either NSU or flasher are your only real options, either of which will require reinstallation of all applications.
