Selling N800 for N95..is it worth it?
 

Hey guys!

I'm getting seriously tired of the N800 now, screen problems, headset broke, was a ripp off and so many other things that are wrong with it.

I was thinking.. would it be worth selling the N800 and buying the Nokia N95?

Some people have said the N95 has had it's problems but I think the N800 has even more problems, I'm hoping N95 can view flash the same way a PC can, and also it has tons of internal memory already, PLUS the camera is 5mp instead of a crappy CMOS webcam lol.

With Opera Mobile 9 coming to Symbian and Windows Mobile, I think the need for the N800 will lessen. We're slowly moving towards convergence, and I think superphones like the N95 or iPhone can provide comparable browsing experiences.

Obviously flash and screen resolution will hamper this, but scaling is improving so rapidly that I expect the phones to catch the Internet Tablet in the next year or two.

It is my hope that the N800 can stay ahead by providing better implementations of Opera 9, Skype and email.

You would think with an 800x480 touch screen we could have a nice email application that fits on the screen properly but they treat the device as if its a scaled down desktop OS. I hate to bring up the iPhone... but Apple wasn't kidding when they claimed their software was 5 years ahead of other mobiles.

Nokia needs to focus on usability, large icons and flowing interface elements to name some.

If I click an email subject, it should slide over to the email for viewing. Click close and it slides back to the subject lists. Why the hell is it opening a new window, which takes 4-5 seconds just to load. Most of the software on the N800 is fairly bogus.

I won't discount the potential, nor the superior browsing experience. But its mostly due to linux and Opera... everything else is pretty weak.

They need to toss the entire email client, rebuild the contacts application, implement a calendar, and give us proper media playback, accelerated by the DSP.

I'm not sure how you can compare the 240x320 pixel screen on the N95 with the 800x400 screen on the N800 - browsing on the former will be significantly more unpleasant than browsing on the latter, IMHO.

I also don't think the N800 and N95 are direct substitutes, particularly if you bought the N800 with the intention of browsing the internet. The two devices are good companions but not substitues unless internet browsing is not your main criteria.

If that is true about the Iphone being available unlocked and unbranded..well that changes things considerably. I gave away my N800 to a family member when it outgrew whatever it was that I got it for in the beginning. Meanwhile the N95 I got is a super device...some bugs such as poor bluetooth handling..but overall very good. I thought it would be a brick, but quite the contrary it is very compact and light. The fact that it's not compatible with Cingular's 3G is a negative and makes the Iphone more attractive but ONLY if available unlocked and unbranded.

Who knows why people buy things and what expectations they have from them. I for one got tired of lugging my laptop everywhere just to be able to check my email and browse some web while getting leg burns from the bottom of the laptop. Getting N800 I knew it was not a cell phone and wasn't expecting it to be.

N800 fits the need perfectly. Since I'm on gmail I don't need any native client. Opera is not perfect but does the job. I'd prefer Firefox (no not Minimo), but...

And then I figured I could use it to listen to music stored on my server. Canola is a beautiful piece of software that doesn't fit into "crippled down desktop app" category. Why are people complaining about lack of good media player on N800? UKMP also looks very promising.

And then I figured I can watch movies while I'm on the road on the awesome 4.2 inch wide screen.

And then I figured I can add GPS to it and be able to use it in the car while listening to music through car stereo system via $9 cassette adapter. If I can only figure out how to watch a movie while navigating with GPS and ... Just kidding.

If Nokia added support for A2DP and Skype, I'd sell my cell phone (well maybe not right away).

I use 320x240 browsing on my n75 and it's downgrade total to the n800, flash does not work. Don't fool yourself the n95 and the iPhone are first generation devices, in 6 months a much improved experience will be announced. Just like the 770 to the 800 the changes will be quite significant. They have already announced an n81 and n82 that look awesome.

I sold my N800 and purchased the N95. The comparisons are night and day. In my opinion, the two devices have two very different functions. The N800 is pure Internet, while the N95 is a jack of all trades. The N800, with external and peripheral devices can become a match for the N95 in terms of GPS, calling (Skype), music playing, the N95 has it all in one device. If you are looking for a one device fits all, then the N95 is it. If you are looking for a platform to build on and are patient then the N800 might be the way to go.

Its been 6 months... I just want to use it.

I still can't type a paragraph in Opera because it doubles and breaks text severely (with the thumb board). I'm mostly happy with it, but I'm glad there is alternatives coming out like the Foleo, and that $200-400 Asus.

I hope the next firmware revision meets my expectations. I'll give it until then.
