sudo gainroot and R&D. Quick question!
 

I've not had my N900 long. 6 days to be exact.

A few days ago while following some instructions on here I opened X Term and typed "sudo gainroot" and I saw a message "enable R&D if you want to break your device" or something like that. I didn't do anything else after that and closed X Term.

I did this BEFORE installing 'rootsh'......which I have done now.

Now I've read about the dangers of R&D Mode and my question is: Have I damaged my phone and put it into R&D mode?

No, you haven't put it into R&D mode.
You could put your phone into this mode with help of flasher, though.
Sometimes it can be useful (for instance: when you have broken it strongly enough for watchdog to put it into reboot loop, but weakly enough to be able to fix it when watchdog is turned off).

R&D mode is a way to have sudo gainroot working without rootsh installed.

Installing rootsh doesn't automatically enable R&D mode.

In half an hour, to be exact.

i have installed rootsh and then after restarting i opened x_terminal and then typed "sudo flasher --enable-rd-mode" ...then they asked for PASSWORD..What is the password???how to enable rd mode??if i enable it then will my phone be damaged ....can any1 help

after you install rootsh, you can type sudo gainroot at x-term to be able to do things that require root access.

RD mode can be enabled with the flasher, from your pc.

Why you need to enable RD mode? There aren't many good reasons to enable it except if you are already in trouble.

thanx mate.......i need to enable RD mode for playing games lyk nfsuc.......if i enable RD mode how can it effect my device............what is the flasher?how will i get it

No, no you don't have to enable R&D mode to play games. Be careful. R&D mode cannot damage the device by itself, but it enables the user to do dangerous things IF he knows what he is doing.


Study a little bit more and do not enable R&D IT IS DANGEROUS.
You can do almost anything on this device, even install other OSes without R&D mode.

If you want to run commands as root first install rootsh, then run
and then any command you want to run as root, but BE CAREFUL, it is easy to make your device unusable by running commands as root. And since you don't even know what flasher is it is safer that you read a little bit more about how things work and then start messing up.

LOL Qwasix is right. You don't need R&D mode to play NSFU for Preenv.

where DID you get the idea that you need it for NFSU? lol

the only reason i'd stay in R&D mode is the cool activity flashing lights on the keyboard :P
