pymaemo-optify says it can't install on dist-upgrade...

...but apt-get install pymaemo-optify says its already the latest version...

have tried all the usual tricks (forcing and dpkg --configure -a) but can't get my n900 to update.

if anyone has come across this problem or knows how to fix it that'd be great.
logs below.

apt-get update &&
apt-get dist-upgrade -f

Did you try apt-get update instead of dist-upgrade? Which of the repositories do you have enabled?

Simple - don't do dist-upgrade. The repositories are not 100% consistent (some packages do not have all the required dependencies available) so a dist-upgrade will not work.

Re: pymaemo-optify says it can't install on dist-upgrade...

not using dist-upgrade would defeat the purpose of using a linux-based phone, there's a lot of apps that don't show up in the default app manager.

after some digging I've come across this article:
http://bit.ly/evi9bO
I followed the steps and...

I wouldn't recomend uninstalling pymaemo-optify as the article suggests as it will uninstall any applications that depend on python.

I also found that a lot of core apps wanted to uninstall when I tried to do a dist-upgrade after installing the newer pymaemo-optify (ie pulseaudio, hildon-theme, libqt etc, etc, to the tune of 496 packages on my device)

so, it looks like the only way to resolve the issue is to backup your settings and flash your n900.

edit: oh, and after installing a single python app (mediabox in this case) i'm back to square one with dist-upgrade complaining about python2.5-minimal. will flash the damn thing when I get home.

Do you now finally get it, that dist-uprade might break your system.

The Dist-Upgrade is only for the distribution version[maemo5 is the distribution] upgrade of your os, like from maemo5 to maemo6, which we will never see.

Then you use "apt-get upgrade". Yes, there's some packages that get held back and you have to install manually (via apt-get install) but that's because they require installing new packages or uninstalling existing ones, both cases where I prefer to see exactly what the implications are anyway.

I run into the same problem. So do you mean that there are no other ways besides reflashing?
