What would happen if the battery runs out?
 

It never happened, but I really worry about it.

My N900 could only last 10 to 12 hours after fully charged everyday. Sometimes when I get home there's only about 10%or even less of juice left, that's quite scary and I don't know what would happen when it's totally drained off.

Any idea or experience?

I have let mine run down many times. It just shuts off. You plug it in, it charges, and it is fine.

The phone knows when it is about to die, so its does it normal shutdown routine.

One thing I love, even if your phone has switched off because of a flat battery, enough juice is set aside to set off your alarm clock.

It can even play music for an hour straight without the battery checks after it hits "Battery low", though I suggest you don't do that, can ruin battery life :)

So would turning off the battery checks mean stopping bme? I guess doing that would be useful if your battery ran out and you really needed to make a phone call.

I definitely wouldn't run it to a hardware forced low battery shutdown frequently. If the software (bme) fails to shutdown when battery power is declining, the hardware will eventually do that instead. The hardware brutally cuts power, and if it happens in the middle of an emmc write, bad things can happen.

I'm sure Nokia has the best quality emmc from the best suppliers, but let's look at what was happening over with SmartQ that used a Sandisk emmc, the emmcs started failing into permanently broken state when power was abrubtly cut...


As for the original poster's question, if there are any issues in getting the N900 charged again after running empty, I would unplug it and remove the battery for a few seconds, plug battery back in, plug usb back in, wait 5 minutes, and then try start it (holding powerbutton atleast 3 seconds as the notification led lights up).
