[HELP] How do I configure IRC plugin for conversations?

Can anyone point my to some instructions for this? I can't find a single line about it anywhere. specifically, it won't connect to freenode, i don't know what i'm doing wrong.
Otherwise can you recommend an IRC client other than x-chat? It uses tiny little fonts and is quite painful for me to use. i'd totally the comfy GUI of conversations app...
thanks Ben

Like all other Telepathy plugins, from the status menu, where you go online, offline and set status message (Availability), click on the account name.

If you don't have one, click Accounts and add one.

I already got this far right away :-)

I have an account for freenode, which works fine e.g. in Opera on my PC. Maybe i entered the wrong settings - I want to join maemo chat on freenode, could you tell me the all info I need to enter into telepathy plugin?
I can't find them anywhere after searching for half an hour...
thanks

Re: [HELP] How do I configure IRC plugin for conversations?

To connect to IRC, you need a server and a port. To negotiate connection, you need a nick and username.

Servers here:
http://freenode.net/irc_servers.shtml

Ports are 6666 and 6667-6669 and 7000 sometimes. Use 6666.

Nick must be unique. Pick something as needed. Usernames might be registered.

Go to terminal and root. Ping servers until they work, ideally telnet to port 6666 to make sure (IRC is a text protcol).

Mine works just fine. Test your settings from a PC and make sure ports aren't closed.

If you don't want simple messages, you need a full client. Use xchat, it's good. I am fairly sure fonts can be changed.

Note that telepathy plugins were meant for IM. IM is based on peer message. IRC is a Relay Chat system, which is used to relay messages through servers to channel members. IRC is chatroom-centered so a client will be way better.

Wiki page has a link to freenode servers, specs and hints.
