Im trying to do this.

I want to be able to use 3g/wifi through the N900, to my laptop, as well as being able to connect to the phone, via usb.

I setup everything, then I get to the bottom which tells me "The networking configuration on the PC side should be almost automatic on most OS:es. If needed configure your PC to use DHCP on the USB interface.".

Well, its not.
I tried http://wiki.maemo.org/N900_USB_networking before, now im trying the one above and it still isnt working.

Is the ONLY way, to use the Nokia PC suite?

If you want to connect 3g true wifi just download joikuspot from this site www.joikuspot.com, hope this help:)

Just install Mobile Hotspot from the repos, the newist version should support sharing your mobile internet trough USB.

The part about USB networking being almost automatic on most OS's is perhaps some creative use of the word 'automatic' - Remember, if it's a wiki, it's not authoritative, it might even be a lie.

USB networking is not nearly automatic in any OS. Linux does make the process quite painless though, but you're obviously using Windows.

The step by step guide you linked in your post is accurate as far as configuring the N900.

What you need to do now is have Windows recognize your N900 not as a mass storage device, but as a networking device. RNDIS is what Windows calls it, but good luck with that :-)

To answer your question, it's probably much easier to do one of two things:

1. PC-Suite or Ovi-Suite
2. Release your grip on Microsoft and convert to Linux.
