HP WebOS devices

Thoughts on the new WebOS devices? I'm most excited by the Veer with the tiny 2.6 inch screen.

Linux-based, touch friendly, coming to smartphones, tablets and computers. How come that sounds so familiar?

I love them! I had Palm devices many years before getting my N800. It's nice to see Palm back in the game with vengeance :) HP seems to have similar plans for webOS as Nokia & Intel have for Meego. It would be great if the new strategy of Nokia would in fact be some kind of cooperation with webOS.

Dreaming aside, I'm hoping Nokia will finally release a N8X0 sized device that I could use for the demanding technical stuff, so I could get a HPalm Veer as a simple & elegant phone to accompany it :)

It is true WebOs is coming to desktop PCs http://www.zdnet.com/blog/btl/with-w...-windows/44649
It seems like computing is moving back towards the integrated model where the OS only runs on a specific peace of hardware and the hardware only runs the specific OS it has.

Yah unlike Nokia and Intel, HP actually has their product on the Market.

Amazing how long it took HP to announce/release several devices with WebOS since they acquired Palm...
Now compare that to Nokia and Maemo 5 / MeeGo...

Maemo 5 = 1 device
MeeGo = maybe none

@H3llb0und: to be fair, I think hp just funded ongoing internal Palm projects and rebranded them as hp. But yeah, in the grand scheme of things, and considering how slow some of these bahemoth corporations move (and especially if you contrast them with Nokia), hp is pretty dang good.

Is WebOS as geek-friendly as Maemo is used to be?
Is it possible to open a terminal, get root, write a shell script, install or remove packages from cli?
Is there X? Is it possible to port an open-source software to WebOS?

I know I can google all that, but there are so many friends here with deep knowledge in mobile IT, that I'm here to hope for a kind and informative answer ;)

Not out of the box, but with homebrew, yes, pretty close it seems. They also have the second best community of all phones :)

Edit: wth do you mean with "used to be"? Maemo is as geek friendly as ever :P
