PIM (Calendar, Contacts, Todo) Suite and Syncing with Evolution - Instructions!

Hey folks! I'm sure several of you have been trying to figure out how to use the N800 as a PIM/PDA device (with calendar, contacts, and todo list software), and you may be using the GPE stuff or Dates/Contacts (Pimlico Project). I was undecided between them and knew that there was a way to synchronize it with my desktop PC (Evolution) but never really figured out how - I couldn't find any exact directions for the N800 and the directions I found were varying degrees out of date.

Well, I sat down and had some time to figure out exactly what combination of existing software and configuration stuff was needed to get synchronization to work, and I'm pleased to say, it works! With only a few minor hitches, I can synchronize my desktop to my N800!

I've written up specific instructions and posted them on my web site (so I can link from all over, and keep them up to date) Synchronize N800 and Evolution PIM Software. It uses Evolution PIM software on the PC, GPE suite on the N800, and OpenSync with MultiSync 0.9x GUI for syncing, running on the PC. Let me know if there are any additions/changes that are necessary: most of the stuff I did today, but a few things (setting up SSH and becomeroot, etc) I did before and so am documenting from memory.

Furthermore, it should be possible for a creative tinkerer to use different OpenSync plugins instead of Evolution: I know there is a Google Calendar plugin, among others.

Enjoy! (and thanks to the OpenSync, MultiSync, GPE, and Evolution developers for their great software!)

Ryan

[edit: The instructions should also, in theory, work on the 770, though the parts about getting SSH set up might vary a bit, and the software sources should obviously be the appropriate ones for the device you are using]

Well written instructions on the site. I'll adapt them for my own uses (I use Kontact) later.

Hmm, I just now saw the Apps forum - I never really browse the lists of forums - just the forums themselves. I probably should have posted this there where it could help more people - could a mod move it please?

Don't see why not, if you can get opensync running. I also saw something that takes syncml->outlook, and you can run opensync on the N800 itself to get syncml, so that could work too. What I have works for me, though, now, and I have plenty of other things to hack on.

Re: PIM (Calendar, Contacts, Todo) Suite and Syncing with Evolution - Instructions!

I have updated the guide, including instructions on how to make it work if you use Dropbear for SSH (it can be a little easier if you don't use SSH for other stuff) or if you use KDE PIM software on your desktop!

I really should rename the page... Sync GPE on Nokia 770, N800 with Evolution or KDE PIM

Oh, and since I originally posted this, basically all of my "hitches" were worked out except 1. Todo syncing of completed items now works great, as does category syncing. Kudos to the great GPE folks and Graham Cobb for his work on GPESYNCD that works behind the scenes with OpenSync to make this all happen!

Well this is all swell and tandy but isn't there really no way to properly sync my fancy n800 with iCal and contacts on macintosh.

I could use some cellphone or such but I prefer n800. It looks more pro to use that than some lameass cellphone.

Can something like this be acpmplished with KDE + bluetooth + something? I know my question is OT but still.

Re: PIM (Calendar, Contacts, Todo) Suite and Syncing with Evolution - Instructions!

Well, you can do a nasty double-read-only sync: sync GPE to Google Calendar, publish iCal to iCalX, import iCalX into Google Calendar. Then you have essentially two calendars - a "created on n800" calendar and a "created on mac" calendar. (Found this on google when I wanted to know the same thing... not wanting to take credit for the idea) I have no idea about contacts... OpenSync might have something to say though...

(to answer your question - KDE uses OpenSync in kitchensync, and bluetooth is just another way to establish a connection and doesn't inherently gain us anything. I wish this was easier, but at this point I think contributing to OpenSync is the best course of action. Apparently the current development version has real promise, and even the "old not as good" version works for my daily use, at least when I have more than my MacBook...)
