MMC boot potential problem?
I recently purchased my 770 (through woot), and have been very happy with it so far. I wen through the steps of having it boot off a 2GB MMC card today using this howto: http://maemo.org/community/wiki/howt...from_mmc_card/
Near the end, after running this command "/tar-temp/bin/tar cf - -C /floppy . | /tar-temp/bin/tar xvf - -C /opt" xtem just closed and it kicked me back to the desktop. Hoping the transfer finished properly, I reopened xterm and ran "chroot /mnt/initfs cal-tool --set-root-device ask:mmc2" The problem now, is that the boot menu defaults to mmc2, but that fails to boot. However when I select just mmc, it boots and appears to work properly. I'm not sure what was supposed to happen, and I don't want to continue using the device if I am going to have to retransfer everything over to the mmc. Should I be worried that it wont boot from mmc2, and is there a way to check that the transfer completed properly? |
Re: MMC boot potential problem?
that command should have taken 30 minutes or so to complete. it should show a bunch of files being copied. That command is what copies the filesystem to the card.
sounds like maybe the syntax was wrong? |
Re: MMC boot potential problem?
also, are u using ITOS2006 or ITOS2007? I noticed some commands were wrong for 2007, the commands for insmod were wrong for the mbcache.ko file, if i remember correctly. The path was wrong.

Re: MMC boot potential problem?
I am using ITOS2006 and I did what I could to minimize the possibility of errors. The command did take awhile, I was able to watch the latest episode of DLTV and part of TRS while it went.
If I retry the process, I will install an ssh service and run the command through putty so I can just paste the line in and avoid any typos. |
Re: MMC boot potential problem?
Xterm "crashed" prematurely for me the first time too... I went back and ran the tar command-line again before running the insmod steps. I believe you should be able to simply select boot from flash to use the original setup and recover your steps... redo the tar copy and then continue.

Re: MMC boot potential problem?
I ran through the whole operation again, started with a fresh format on the mmc (decided I wanted more than 15000 blocks for a fat system). I ran the majority of the walk through from a remote ssh session in order to avoid potential typos that I could have made as well as prevent any xterm crashes. The whole thing went very smoothly, and it is now booting properly from mmc2. Any big mods like this and I'm going through putty again, its deffinatly the way to go.
I appreciate everyones help with this, hopefully I won't be back asking questions again anytime soon. |
