Mobile broken

Hello People!

Today I was cycling through the city, and I felt something falling out of my pocket. Kdeng pam klets spleng... There was my N900. I have tried booting it up at home... a broken screen. But god may know what is broken too.

My first question: How can I recover the data out of my N900? There must be a way by just reading the RAW MMC-data, and then just mounting it on my Linux workstation. I bet someone has done this before, any ideas?

My second question: What will the successor of the N900? Or won't there be any, because the whole Microsoft-Nokia takeover is killing Maemo/Meego? I think I must go to Android, then... I only allow Linux on my mobile! Root and freedom is the way to go, I believe.

My third question: The shop where I bought it won't propably send it out for warranty. Is there any way to hide the scratches from the device? *Maybe* they will fix it.

The N900 is the best phone I ever had. Buying a new one (and no, I ain't going to buy one from eBay or second hand) is nearly impossible. There are no trustworthy shops in the Netherlands area wich provide them for a small price. The Phone shop in my city can't deliver one, unknown deliver time.

I think I need to switch to Android, but that breaks my heart. Google must keep their hands off my contacts and other private things...

Thanks for any response, input, and pointers.

PS: The N900 is a bit old, too. 600Mhz is a bit 2009... 2x1+Ghz is more 2011!

For the broken screen, plug it into your TV with tv cable and use it as a screen while you recover your data.

There is no sucessor to the n900, android is a smashed toed comprimise for a replacement (unless all you want is angry birds rio in which case it is great). Apparently a new device will be unvieled in about a week (FCC secrecy is lifted, but we have to wait).

If it is merely a broken screen, you can pick up a replacement on EBAY (screen that is) and fix it yourself in about 40 minutes. All you need is some jewellers screwdrivers and a teardown guide.

Order one from germany (amazon.de) and replace the keyboard?
Screen is like 60eur touchscreen is like 60eur too so 120eur for both.
If turned off you might get your data off by just pluging in to an usb-port at your pc as you do not need to tap any button on screen if turned off, it just provides the masstorage device then.

Thanks for the replies, guys!

I will try to send my N900 to Nokia. I don't loose anything, because if there are costs I can get it back without further costs.

Now my question. I heard Nokia has sensors built in their devices to monitor falls. They could be readout at the repair center. I have reflashed the device, and succesfully recovered the data.

Is there a way to 'reset' this sensor-counters? That would probably be my last way to succeed.

Any ideas on this one?

Wut? That smacks of BS.
