Change application names

Is there a relatively straightforward way of changing application names on the N900 (for the purposes of personalization)? Mostly I want the new names to appear on the application menu list (it is not so important that they appear as the title of each application itself).

Hey, you can go to /usr/share/applications/hildon/ and open the .desktop file of the app you want to change.
I recommend using "FileBox" and "PyGTKEditor", so you can easily edit by tapping and holding down on the file.

Just adding, you'll need to do the edit as root.

Thanks for this info, but it appears not all applications have entries in this folder. For example, Dataviz' Documents to Go (Word to Go, Sheet to Go, Slideshow to Go) do not have entries here. Where to find them?

Oh yes, also documents to go is there ( if you have full version)

Slideshow to go => sstgeditor.desktop
Sheet to go => stgeditor.desktop
Word to go => wtgeditor.desktop

they are in /usr/share/applications/hildon

Re: Change application names

I recommend using leafpad. u then have to type in terminal as "root"
leafpad /usr/share/applications/hildon/xxxxxx.desktop

it'll open something like this:
Quote:

[Desktop Entry]
Encoding=UTF-8
Version=0.1
Type=Application
Name=Bloxorz
Exec=/usr/bin/browser_dbuscmd.sh load_url file:///home/user/MyDocs/flash%20games/Bloxorz.swf
Icon=blox
Name is what u're aiming for. then save and close

Renaming the .desktop file won't change the name but it'll screw things up,, u gotta open the .desktop file using leafpad (the stock txt editor won't do the trick)

and u'll see something like this
Quote:

[Desktop Entry]
Encoding=UTF-8
Version=0.1
Type=Application
Name=Bloxorz
Exec=/usr/bin/browser_dbuscmd.sh load_url file:///home/user/MyDocs/flash%20games/Bloxorz.swf
Icon=blox
I already mentioned it b4. Change the Name=xxxxxxx .. while xxxxx is the name that u want. and No u dun have to restart unless u change the icon.
