WiFi SMS forwards your sms to your computer over wifi or usb-networking so you can answer them with your usual keyboard at home. It consists of two parts.
The client application on the N900 which connects to WiFi SMS on the computer and the server application which will actually run on Windows with .NET 4 installed. (Usually this should be no problem)

Here is a screenshot of the server.

The application features are:
  • Sending and receiving SMS to and from the computer
  • Transfering your phonebook from the phone to the application on the computer where you can choose the people you would like to write to.
  • Sending one sms to multiple recipients (Just hold down ctrl and choose contacts)
  • See who has written you an sms (it shows the full name from your phonebook)
  • Supports every TCP/IP-based connection ways.
You can start an accesspoint and connect your device to it
or use MAD Developer to get a network over usb.
  • Client works in portrait and landscape mode! (Although portrait might be useless because of debugtext wrapping)

Here you go. I zipped the server and uploaded it here (because 1.46MB where tooooo big for maemo talk..) :

If you think this is an useful application for your mobile phone I may puplish it in extras-testing or so. Didn't do this before so I am fully new to this.

The debianfile is attached.

Oh and yes! Feedback desired!

Interesting, but I would like to see a more portable version of the server. (I run GNU/Linux on my workstation.)

Re: [Announce] WiFi SMS

Yes sure that may be programmed in the future.
Maybe we will find somebody who agrees to code a linux port of the server.
How the server communicates with the client is described here:
http://talk.maemo.org/showthread.php?t=74043
And it will be possible to get the source code of the server as it is online with svn on assembla. This makes it easier to migrate the C#-Code to linux.

Does it still charge you the carrier fees?

Yes, this is not a free sms tool for online sms over internet. It sends real sms with you as addressor =)
But in germany we have sms flatrates so this is not a big problem here :)

very nice ! Was looking for sth like this for a long time.
If this could work over bluetooth this would be excellent !
Wifi is a way too high battery-consumer.
USB-networking is nice but implies a cable which sucks for answering your phone.

TNX !

I agree because it backs up my contact list, doesn't need to be installed and it's more convenient to wirte on a PC keyboard. Bottom line, it does what expected to do.

@wimmme
http://wiki.maemo.org/Bluetooth_PAN This might help you. It is called Personal Area Network and should make you able to create a LAN between two devices. But I did not test it. If you are running fine with this you could give us a hint how you did it :)

Edit: I found a tutorial how to setup the network with ip configuration

Wow, this is a great and useful piece of software, especially when used in conjunction with the N900 notifier. It works perfectly also, although i experienced a random disconnection once. Thanks a lot!

Although, I do have a feature request.: Can we have a terminal mode, where we can invoke the client to run and connect to a predetermined ip in a hidden mode?

That way I can make a QBW widget to activate the client when I am connected to my home's wifi easily.
