Some random problems with recorded video's
 

Good day,

I am having some random problems with recorded video's.

A short while ago I tried to uninstall MAFW equalizer. To do this I used the command apt-get remove MAFW*. It removed the equalizer allright, but with it also the media player. So I re-installed the packages using apt-get install mediaplayer.

However, I recorded two video's in between these events. The media player was not installed and the video's I recorded gave problems when I tried to play them. I related this to the fact that the media player package was missing, so after I installed it again, the problem should've been gone.

Now though, when recording, sporadicly the video's give errors when I try to play them on the device, or my notebook. On my n900 it gives the simple "play error" (in dutch: "afspeelfout") and VLC player on my notebook just crashes. When I open such a broken video with Classic media player, it gives some errors in a log file, if someone requests it, i could post them here, but i don't think its related, because it seems the problem is on the n900 itself.

Besides this, some movies have a "blank" first few seconds, after these seconds the video kicks in. Audio was playing from the start. This is also completely random.

To make a long story short, some random movies "just dont seem to play" and some random movies have no video for the first few seconds, and some movies work fine. If a movie is "broken" it stays this way.. odd isn't it?

I hope anyone can help me. The problem is kinda weird.. Oh btw.. sorry for any bad english I tried my best to make the story as clear as possible ^^

On a regular install with the global firmware, you have a package installed called mp-fremantle-generic-pr. If apt-get ever wants to remove that, say N. It's a metapackage that depends on every package required for the base system.

If you have the PR1.3 global firmware, I'd try install mp-fremantle-generic-pr. I don't know the equivalent for cssu or non-global normal firmware, sorry.

By reinstalling the generic -pr package, you should be able to pull in any missing dependencies. If that's what the problem is. I haven't tested this, though. The CSSU has its own -pr file, which overwrites the generic one. You should make sure PR1.3 is working properly before you install the CSSU.

Also, do these videos (no need for apostrophe ;-)) play with mplayer? I don't know how to check the profile of a video on-device but are you sure they're all baseline?

Thanks for the suggestions, I think I can formulate what went wrong:

I had PR1.3, then installed CSSU, and later got some problems with my kernel so I flashed the kernel back to the basic nokia kernel. After that I removed the package including mediaplayer, with ap-get mediaplayer i got it back on my device. SO, could it be, that because I installed the basic mediaplayer package it conflicts with the dependencies (or whatever you two are referring to) of CSSU?

This is just a brainstorm of what I can make of it, is it resolvable with the commands you gave me? Or am I completely missing the point here^^

Uhm, I am not sure what you are asking from me here, what I do know, is that when I copy the movies to the harddrive of my notebook. It really doesn't matter which player I use to play them, they all fail:
VLC hangs and asks for a crashreport
Mediaplayer classic gives an error report (some sort of LOGfile)
Windows media player gives the standard error "not playable"

Videos.... (never old enough to learn, my old english teacher from highschool would've probably shot me if she knew I made such a basic mistake ;-))

There was a bug that corrupted the videos if you closed the lens cover without stoping the recording first. I can't find it now but I think it's been fixed. Doesn't seem to be any hope to recover the videos.

Could very well be the problem, when and how is it fixed (via an update)?
