Accessing an encrypted backup without an N900

So I was wondering if anyone can help me with this. I have had some trouble with my N900 - its been fully replaced once, and now the second time - Nokia have replaced it and given me an E7 which I don't want. In any case, I need the data from my phone which I foolishly backed up using the interface, and encrypted it.

As far as I can tell, I can use osso-backup to restore it, but I don't have access to a phone, and that binary doesn't appear to be in the SDK.

Does anyone have any ideas? I'd hate to lose my data.

Cheers
Mike

Just looked at the backup directories on my SD card. They contain files with the "zip" extension. I suspect these are just regular password protected zip files. Have you tried to open them using unzip (on Linux) or Winzip (on Windows)?

They are not password protected zip files.
They use parts of OpenSSL to encrypt the backup files, I have some plans to investigate how its stored and possibly write a decryption program.

I'm definitely interested in knowing how to restore manually too. I copied the backup zip files to my desktop and played around with openssl but to no avail... Here is what I tried:
Code:

cat applications.zip | openssl aes-256-cbc -d > x
Openssl then asks for the password. I tried with all supported ciphers (see 'man enc') but I always got 'bad magic number'.

Any further ideas?

Its not pure openssl, I am working on reverse engineering it and should have some code soon I hope.

I'd be /very/ interested once you work out what it is - like I said, my data is locked away until it's worked out. As with the others, I tried passworded zip and other things but it's just down as 'data' in a 'file' command.

Anyone in touch with Nokia? :-)

Does anybody found a way to open an encrypted backup yet?

I'm currently in touch with the Nokia Switzerland customer support. They think what we want to know is so special that even their "specialists" do not know the answer... Their recommendation is to look for answers in internet forums. They even suggested me the search term I should use.
I don't know if I shall laugh or cry...

Are you kidding? hmm i think what is happening with Nokia is that all the good Tech support/Developers were fire, since now Nokia partnered with Micro$oft, there is nothing good to develop anymore :)

Anybody else have figure something out?
