I am also having problems to under stand what is going on. This increases when reading talk.maemo.org.

i use MfE in modest when my BB is down. no problems so far with the latest cssu. 0% crashes. i also use it for my gmail and yahoo accounts. no problems whatsoever.

I do, for reading anyway. Needs a few major changes to be suitable for composing mail in my eyes...

claws-mail (in the devel repo iirc) A powerful desktop client in your pocket. http://www.claws-mail.org/

It works well with my five POP3 accounts, large set of complex filter rules, and couple gigs of locally stored email.

I use modest on occasion (a few times a week) to check a couple of POP accounts. I don't have it run in background-update mode though, only on-demand.
