N9 Encryption

I store a lot of information on my 64GB N9. Some which is pretty confidential. Do we have any way to encrypt part or all of our N9?

If you're asking for file encryption: afaik you can't encrypt whole filesystem yet, and since it may affect performance, I wouldn't do that. Of course, you can use gpg to encrypt/decrypt a single file, by using it on XTerm.

edit: It may be possible to make an encrypted folder, by using AegisFS and AegisCrypto but I don't know anything about them.

One solution is Secufile (http://my-meego.com/software/applica...uto=759&faq=16)

Yes i think file encryption still has not been achieved. Might be too early to ask. I think for now folder encryption would do.

neildk - thanks. Will check this out and see how it works.

Re: N9 Encryption

Application can write to /home/user/.private and can only see and access their own stuff written in there.
The .private directory is automatically hardware-encrypted by Aegis (Aegis has a good side, too).

To make this really secure, the application storing / accessing your data should ask for a password or passphrase that is stored encrypted with Aegis as well.

Just thought I should add this talk: Blackhat 2012 EUROPE - Secure Password Managers and Military-Grade Encryption on Smartphones

In short, the vast majority (pretty much all) of the top apps (free + paid) in iOS / Blackberry that do this folder/file/input "encryption" either don't actually implement it properly or at all - I believe it was under 24hrs with one PC for all of them if you use a 6-7 digit passcode that consists of characters from the entire english keyboard (~96 characters).

Amusing talk if your interested in that kind of thing btw; being a complete beginner looking into the field, I really enjoyed it. Don't know what the situation is with our apps here, but good to keep in mind.

Interested too.

The SDK repos. contains openssl which can be used for individual file encryption.
Perhaps you could use a simple shell script which loops over all the files in a directory, encrypts them with openssl, and removes the originals, and visa vera; this was my method on my old N900.

Still, you have the issue then of potentially being able to recover the unencrypted deleted files unless securely removed.

It would be extremely awesome to have full-flash encryption on the N9, and there are ways it could be implemented, but it's not there yet and it would be a serious undertaking to change that. :(

I wouldn't advise one to trust Aegis to protect your data - it's not very secure against a casual attacker and definitely not secure against an advanced attacker (three-letter agencies, the mafia, etc.).
