[Announce] Handy/SDL and Handy-gui for N900

2 Attachment(s)
Handy-gui is a frontend for Handy/SDL, an Atari Lynx emulator.

Game developer Epyx originally developed the device using the name Handy (that's why this emulator is named Handy), but had to sell it to Atari, which named it Lynx. It was brought on the market in 1989 as the first color screen handheld.

Although technically superieur to the GameBoy (released in the same year), it could not compete in terms of battery duration, compact size and amount of games released.

I ported Handy/SDL 0.5 itself by making a few optimizations, adding key configuration and removing some native gui parts. Roms should have the extension .lnx, or be zipped using that extension.

Bios:

Handy/SDL needs a bootrom called lynxboot.img (512 bytes). Place that file in /opt/handy/ after installing the installation of Handy/SDL.

Both Handy/SDL and Handy-gui can be found in the extra-devel repository.

Happy gaming :)

Code:

Changelog:
0.0.1-1 * Initial release
0.0.1-2 * Change in game selection interface

I was just working on a port of Handy_sdl v0.5 to maemo4/diablo, but I see your's is much better with the gui and key configuration (I just hard-coded a key config that I liked).

Would you consider releasing a version for maemo diablo?

While the Handy code would not be a big problem, I think the gui part is more difficult. It uses Pyside (a Qt extension of python) with some Maemo 5 specific functions.

I based my port on the Pandora version of Handy/SDL (pandy). It had the generic Goomba menu system included, which I removed. Could that part be usable in Maemo 4? I did not try to to compile with Goomba included.

Good work ade its nice to have a gui.

Tried 2 games california games and roadblasters.

Roadblasters has some sound crackle issues and graphical glitches but runs ok apart from that.

California games seems to run ok but the sound is choppy

I have seen 2 games with some graphical glitches, Roadblaster is one of them. The sound from California Games is not that bad in my view, but I must admit the sound emulation is not 100% accurate and could be improved in general. If I compare it to the sound I produced with mednafen, it was a lot better in my case. I don't know witch version of mednafen you used, so I can't compare.
