SDHC cards comparison review
 

While we are waiting on the SDHC card frying issue to be resolved by Nokia, I am keeping an eye on availability and pricing. There is a confusing plethora of choice but very little information on which to base a decision.

This review is very helpful, though there are a few omissions that could have been usefully included e.g. Transcend, Adata, Integral, etc. But the man is only human and a selection of 9 across a wide range of speeds and classes is still a good effort.

I just ordered an Adata 8GB SDHC card from NewEgg. I should have it by Tue/Wed. Some N800 owner posted a comment at NewEgg that this particular card, while Class 2, had speeds like a Class 6. That, coupled with price, was why I ordered that card. I hope I didn't make a mistake.

Is there some SD card speed testing program that runs on the Nokia?

FWIW I have a 1gb Adata sd card doing sterling work on my Zaurus for over 2 years now.

It is interesting to see Delkin eFilm Pro not doing terribly well. ATP were unknown to me prior to this test and seem to be worth checking out.

Lexar and Corsair don't have an 8gb sdhc yet which makes me wonder.

I ran some benchmark tests on my new card. It seems that the card does indeed perform like a Class 6 card on write speeds (6MB/s minimum). Does anyone know what a Class 6 read speed should be?

I also noticed that when copying large video files, putting the SD card in my PC's card reader is about twice as fast as copying the same video to the Nokia via USB. Isn't the N800's USB port supposed to be USB 2? What is the bottleneck - the N800's USB port or its SD card hardware?

That's propably because the N800 stock kernel uses only 24MHz clock speed. With the SDHC kernel (or MMC kernel something for the latest firmware...) N800 can use 48MHz clock speed. This would make it about twice as fast. The higher speed SDHC cards should support 50MHz clock speed, and I believe most card readers do.

Is that higher clock used for everything or just the SDHC card transfer? If everything, I imagine that would suck more battery power. Other than the clock speed difference, what else is different between the official kernel and the one you mentioned? Where can I obtain it? Is is safe to use? If it blows up my N800, can I flash back to the official software?

I just bought a PQI 4GB SDHC card. When I insert it into the external slot, it doesn't show up in the File Manager. Is there a list of cards that don't work with the N800? I'm running the original firmware that came with the N800.
