Replace N900 with some GSM/3g/4g enabled hardware?
One of my N900s got stolen the other day, and i was thinking of a new phone+computer combo to replace it.
I come from the N9110 -> N9500 line of communicators and have therefore always thought that the S60 hildon interface in the N900 was a dumbfolded interface, trying to be a featurephone and avoiding to be a computer. -and the openmoko interface is even more stupid... :( I would like a larger screen, with good processingpower inside and a better keyboard with 0-9 directly acessible just as the old N9x00 had it. In a computerish shell , just like my older stuff from the Atari portfolio to the N9x00 range had. The N900 is too small for my suit-pockets and will easily fall out, the Atari portfolio had a much better size for that. (If you think the N900 is too big, just follow Barney Stinsons advice and "suit up" ;) ) So, i was thinking, would it be possible to get a GSM/3g/4g chip with antenna on a card? and then use something like a beagleboard as the main computer with a homemade case and a good keyboard running debian with xwindows. Or does it already exist a project like this in the linux open hardware community? Or maybe there is some other commercial solution with a palmtop pc with a sim slot for 3g-4g aviable? If i have 3g+ and a big screen+keyboard then i could just as well run xwindows over ssh from my homecomputer, and even get a landline at home to stream my phonecalls thru. Any ideas? |
