metalayer crawler - Again !!!

Hi,

My problems with metalayer crawler are back ... and are making my N800 practically useless. I fixed the bug by adding the crawlpath variable and it seemed to have been fixed.

But since yesterday my CPU usage has been high, and it drained my entire battery during the night in the offline mode. I cant get anything done because metalayer crawler is hogging the CPU.

Any suggestions ? Why can I not turn it off completely ?

You should be able to turn it off completely by renaming /usr/bin/metalayer-crawler to /usr/bin/metalayer-crawler.deactivated and either rebooting or killing the metalayer-crawler process.
Saw that trick in another thread in here and it worked for me.

this will get you the file...

find / -name meta*

this will get you that process...

ps -ef |grep metalayer*

in osso-xterm:
sudo gainroot
cd /usr/bin
mv metalayer-crawler metalayer-crawler.off

(or .deactivated or whatever you want. The point is to rename, which is what the 'mv' command does here.)

Then reboot. It's easier than trying to figure out how you kill it.
I've been running like this for several weeks now (did the change the last time the N800 was discharged in the morning, don't know if it's related to metlayer-crawler but I don't see the use for it anyway).

Re: metalayer crawler - Again !!!

I am a newbe, but I have been following these and all other posts that have to do with battery life and sd card failures. I have had my n800 for about 5 months now. I have been using 2 [two] 2gig sansdisk sd cards continuously filling up, moving around, and swapping out files including movies, pictures, pdfs, and a lot of use with Mam Mapper. Until the os update that is. After the update I wuikly noticed that battery life tanked. Like the above posts..very quickly. I started to play around with the sd cards...ie: empty, full, partial etc... it did not matter. I found too that I began to have a great deal of apps that would hang forcing reboot after reboot. I have finally just put back in the nokia micro sd that the n800 came with. I have no card in the external slot. Battery life is back to what it was when new. As soon as I put another card in the external or internal slot...I immediatly lose hald the battery and apps [does not matter which ones] begin to hang. none of this happened before the os update. I have not and will not try a larger size sd card until this is fully resolved. I would appreciate any input as well. I am not a linux guy or programmer of any type. Just a consumer who thinks the n800 is an incredible little piece of tech..

Since you seem to have a reproducible case (which is way more than I ever had), it would be really interesting if you would be willing to insert one of the cards that provokes the battery drain, confirm it still does, then disable metalayer-crawler and see if it actually makes a difference.. for now, we don't really know, it's all guesswork.

Re: metalayer crawler - Again !!!

Hello TA-t3,
I would be willing to disable Met-crawl but like I said, I am not a "linux" guy etc..I am not even sure what "metalayer-crawler is or what it does. If you could give me a simple "how to" and promis that I wont break my n800, I will give it a shot.

thanks

ps: I see above that there are a couple of ways to do this...which one is simplest and what exactly do I need to accomplish the task at hand...ie: xterm etc...

thanks
