[Council] Volunteer needed to develop simple donationware for the N900 - Developer from the americas? Please answer a couple of questions

We need to create some additional revenue streams for Hildon Foundation and one of the things we're doing is opening up an ovi store account in the Foundation's name and publish some apps.

The rationale behind this is as the store has extensive carrier billing support which will enable people that do not have paypal, bank accounts or other means of contributing to donate to the foundation. The downside is the high fees that Nokia chargers but it will be clear that this is a means for donating if nothing else is available.

The first app to be published will be the tmo forum reader, currently maintained by bibek who has agreed to publish it on behalf of HiFo. (Thanks bibek!)

Unfortunately however this app cannot be published for N900 as the N900 ovi store requires apps built against stock N900 PR1.3 with no dependencies.

So we are in need of an application with only an icon pointing to tmo or wiki, or something generic, relevant to this community (mwkn reader perhaps) built against stock PR1.3 with no dependencies to anything outside the system. Of course bigger applications are welcome and can be later added to the account if they are in line with the foundation's purpose.

If anybody would like to take this up please contact council@maemo.org

All apps will of course be opensource and available from this site or the repos along with the store.

Regards,

Michael
on behalf of the Community Council

Edit:

Are you a developer from the Americas? Do you have paid apps on ovi? We have two questions for you.

1. From what country do you receive Nokia payments? Finland?
2. Are there fees (for money transfer) on top of the 30% Nokia charges

Thanks

I don't get it.. How is ovi store relivent?
You want a revinue stream... Charge monthly access to the repos or create a new store.. Ie Eco system?

Makes Maemo no longer FOSS.

Apps that will end up on Store will still be free from the repos... This place is not going to turn into one that requires one to pay to access anytime soon.

Those who wish to donate can do so using the mechanisms the Store provides and such future revenue streams may provide...

Many people like me don't have access to a credit card to link paypal or simply make international transactions. In this case, ovi store is a bless. I could buy some apps and contribute 70% of that money to the forum.
Yes, revenue will be not too big, but at least as a option, it should be there :)

Can you explain the criteria for determining whether the application is 'in line with the foundation's purpose'? Does it have to be something that provides access to Maemo-related resources? Such applications are the obvious candidates, but I think widening the scope would result in more applications, and thus more cash for HiFo.

I don't have certain criteria for inclusion. Common sense will be used to determine if something is out of line for a FOSS non-profit. For example an app that provides a collection of Windows 7 themed wallpapers, or a client to an online casino wouldn't be a good candidate.

Everything that is not promoting closed source proprietary software or questionable activities is considered suitable.

Quoting the mission of Hildon Foundation for reference

Quote:

The mission of the Foundation is to promote and progress the future availability of MaemoŽ, maemo
derived or inspired open source software, and related toolkits, for mobile devices. The MaemoŽ
operating system and Hildon user interface (which includes several iterations) was originally
developed by Nokia Corporation and used in several commercially available devices. Much of
MaemoŽ and Hildon is currently open source software as defined by the Open Software Foundation
and, as such, continues to be improved upon by a volunteer community for the general benefit of the
public. The Foundation shall undertake such acts as it deems necessary to accomplish this mission.
Further, the Foundation may promote and advocate for the availability of mobile devices which
have open source software and/or open hardware architectures.
