How does 'optifying' work ?

I'm hacking up shapeshifter's Alarmed app to make something else, & I notice that the .py source code resides in the N900 identically in two places:
/opt/alarmed/
/home/opt/alarmed/

also those directories contain a .pyo file, which I wonder is compiled code or something.

1. What's that all about? What's the difference between those directories? Why is it in both? What's a .pyo file ?

2. If I'm just putting together some .py code to run interpreted & not compiled on the N900, where should I put it?

/opt is a symlink to /home/opt

as for .pyo: http://docs.python.org/release/1.5.1p1/tut/node43.html
