N9- No Internal GPS

2 Attachment(s)
Hello. This is my first post on these forums after extensive searching and reading through other GPS-based posts, I still have no answer.

I have a white, 64GB N9 purchased from Jordan. PR1.3 (40.2012.21-3_PR_006)

Through Wifi and a 3g data connection, the Maps and location function just fine. Without any data, and being completely offline, the internal GPS is nowhere to be found. I have tried using GPSMeeFo and it has never been able to find a single satellite.

When I go into the settings, this is where I believe the issue lies.

Settings-->Device-->GPS and Positioning

The last option, which is "GPS Device" will ONLY give me the option of "External GPS Device." That is the only available selection from the dropdown menu.

Because I am currently without a data plan, what are my options for actually using the INTERNAL Gps of the device?

Thanks in advance

I'd say there are just 2 possibilities:

1.) You have some problem in the device SW/FW, which makes it unable to use the GPS. A reflash might help in this case.

2.) Your GPS HW is damaged and so system does not recognize it, removing the option from the menus. Nothing to do here except send the device for repair.

Unfortunately Nokia Care in the USA said that they wont/can't service the N9 for me, as it was never meant for my market. Which sounds like rubbish.

How potentially disastrous is the flashing process? I know I would need to try to go up to PR_009 from PR_006. Does it matter which country I pick for the firmware (Northern Europe, Central Europe, etc) since it is originally Jordan?

Why you like to go up?
For me it didnt have any benefit and you dont can go back.
I hade flashed my phone a lot of times without any problems.
You can do it in Nokia Suites or like here described in the comprehensive firmware flashing guide.
I recommend you strongly to flash with the original PR 006
Id like to go back from my PR420 crapy Country version :(

I am concerned that the reason I don't have the option for using the Internal GPS is BECAUSE I bought it in Jordan. The Nokia support over the phone said that occasionally Middle Eastern handsets do not support GPS. Which is ridiculous..

So maybe you have the similar problem that the mexicans with N9 without Skype, Gtalk und Hotspot.
The hardware will be the same, so eventually only you have to install the software, like the driver.

Someone can help? Which packages we need for GPS?
Or you made the decision and flash with 009 FW. Some pages before they recomend Swiss Firmware Provider branded. In this term an european have to help you

Well I just finished talking to Nokia Support. They said that the N9 in Jordan is NOT disabled from having GPS. And to send it to a repair center to have it reflashed. So I guess I am going to try what was suggested and reflash the 006 Legacy firmware and see what happens..

Update: Successfully flashed to

Dfl61 Harmattan 40.2012.21-3 Pr Legacy 006-oem1-958 Arm.bin

which is the legacy software for the Country and product code printed on my sim tray. Still no internal GPS. Here's what my GPS and Positioning settings look like before I flashed...:confused:

Re: N9- No Internal GPS

If you enable the access to console, you could investigate if the GPS device is alive and detected from the system logs.
E.g. during boot, the file /var/log/syslog logs this:
Code:

...
[    9.553222] wl1273_fm_module_init
[    9.713623] Loading BCM4751 GPS driver
[    9.742248] OMAP SSI hw driver loaded
...

You can check that kernel driver is loaded (however, that probably doesn't happen in your case):
Code:

$ lsmod | grep -i gps
bcm4751_gps            3913  1

And then at lower level, here is the device:
Code:

$ find /sys/devices/platform | grep -i gps
/sys/devices/platform/i2c_omap.3/i2c-3/3-01fa/misc/bcm4751-gps
/sys/devices/platform/i2c_omap.3/i2c-3/3-01fa/misc/bcm4751-gps/uevent
/sys/devices/platform/i2c_omap.3/i2c-3/3-01fa/misc/bcm4751-gps/dev
/sys/devices/platform/i2c_omap.3/i2c-3/3-01fa/misc/bcm4751-gps/subsystem
/sys/devices/platform/i2c_omap.3/i2c-3/3-01fa/misc/bcm4751-gps/device
/sys/devices/platform/i2c_omap.3/i2c-3/3-01fa/misc/bcm4751-gps/power
/sys/devices/platform/i2c_omap.3/i2c-3/3-01fa/misc/bcm4751-gps/power/wakeup
