Jolla has sold less than 100000 devices? My guess is way below 100k, I hope I'm wrong.

Thanks Dave999. When I originally opened this thread I had included the article but thought that I might be violating some copyright law so I removed it and tried to set up a link. But when testing the link it forced me to log in...

Anyways, I thought the article was worth bringing to folks attention here. It was hard for me to tell if Jolla is going to manufacture another device. Seems like the emphasis will be on software that they licence. The thing I found most odd was that for the western markets Jolla was persuing deals with supermarkets. This has me a little worried... Think I might buy the current phone even though it has no data in US cause there may not be another, at least not made by Jolla. Nice to add to my Finnish merchandise collection!

Shame it makes no mention of:

• Sailfish being Linux based.
• Nokia Maemo/Meego/Sailfish relationship.
• Intel involvement during Meego work and their Moblin project preceeding it.
• Burning platform memo (just says they changed to Windows, would be better if they explained circumstances)
• N9! Critic reviews and sales success without marketting would be a good element to have identify how successful it actually was considering the conditions it was released in.
• Community efforts to continue Meego via Mer after Nokia dropped it.
• Jolla contributions to Mer.
• Samsung being linked to Tizen.
• Tizen being another Linux based OS.

Is there something positive worth to mention in Nokia and Intel history? I think this article is more positive for Jolla without those two mentioned.

Jolla should continue carving their own story. What's gone on in the past is the past and for most people, being associated with Nokia has negative connotations if they remember old Symbian phones.

Keep in mind that this is an article in the New York Times, which caters primarily to the Northeast American "intelligentisia". While their technology writers are actually surprisingly not terrible*, they may not always include details not relevant to the American market. And since the NY Times is a general news media organization and not a tech specialist publication, some of the technical minutiae may not be as important to the crux of the story. That said, if you are an everyday reader of the Times, you would already have the context of the Nokia strategy shift, the Intel-Nokia business relationship, etc, as those aspects were reasonably well-covered by the paper in the past.

As an aside, the one way to scare an American general market audience is to mention the word "linux". So, perhaps, if the article was meant to put a positive spin on Jolla's efforts, mentioning linux could be counter-productive.


* Edit to add: though some of their writers (e.g., David Pogue) are known Apple fanboys/apologists

Really? Now why would that be so, is Linux somehow considered suspicious by americans?

I would not think so, since Linus Torvalds himself lives in the states nowdays, and AFAIK Linux is used by quite a few US appliance makers, not to mention Android devices... :D
