Can't download 1.3 Firmware, broken links!

Hi guys -

I recently purchased an unopened n900 running old firmare. I'm following the guide to install CSSU and the update failed citing missing packages (libhildon-thumbnail0). After failing to apt-get update and not having root, I decided to try and update the firmware to 1.3.

All of the links at http://wiki.maemo.org/Updating_the_firmware are broken. I can't get Flasher-3.5, the firmware updates, the SDK or anything at all because the nokia links are dead. Does anyone have this software? Is there a place online that I can still download it?

It's extremely frustrating! Thanks for any help.

Mike

Re: Can't download 1.3 Firmware, broken links!

Yes the links are brok-k-ken :D
Wee bit of an issue with the fact Nokia had a lot of 3rd party proprietary stuff on fremantle..ie skype etc...
There is a liability issue with having the necessary downloads right here on site.
...postulation is ....they had no choice....
It is frustrating esp. for new people here at this mo.
There are a number of projects in the works to circumnavigate the issue..ie Freemantle ...notice the extra "e" :)
Back to the frustration you must be facing...yes...it is...but enhance your calm...
The community runs this place....there is no corporate help center to call and vent to.
It's just us ....your fellow users here...who can help.
This is a good thing...better in a lot of ways than how it used to be.
Here....and don't forget to use the wiki! If hard up use the search ...or gurgle even...

AND ...Especially if you are new to the n900 and maemo....read the how to's 1st and then do it 2nd.......in fact if you think you get it....read it again...don't just "think" you understand....and if all else fails ask ...this is a good place with good people who can help.

Hmmm...
I'm beginning to believe that we need a sticky at the top of the n900 and fremantle subforums with that linked post from scy right there prominent so new folks can easily see and find it instead of perpetually having to answer the same question over and over to new people.
Heya-hiya-hoya mr. Moderator sir.... :D
whaddaya think?
good idea?

Thank you! That link has everything. I think it would be really helpful to include this in a stickied post in the forum.

I don't understand how linking to the Flasher or the firmware would cause a licensing issue, but I see what you mean.

Re: Can't download 1.3 Firmware, broken links!

Weeellll....
Think of it like this...
fremantle ...for example...isn't just built by Nokia...
Alot of other companies went in on the platform...
Those companies and their proprietary bits that they allowed Nokia to use ...had conditions....and probably an allowed shelf -life...just for example.
Now I don't blame anyone or entity for trying to keep their hard worked for stuff their own...hence...they don't want to share it ...give it..or loan it past the prescribed time which has been agreed to with lawyers and all.
So...without knowing say exactly why whom or what is preventing Nokia from giving us ....what so many consider outdated info ...I can safely imagine that it is about Nokia's responsibility...liability...and a few other "-ility's" ....thrown in too. Hence Nokia couldn't give the platform to us even if they reallllly reallly wanted to because of those 3rd party companies that expressly stated otherwise. Toss onto the fire....M$ decides on purging newly acquired Nokia of anything costly and irritating like maemo.
Next it is about flagrant use of hosting legally owned by an "other" entity....proprietary software...and sharing...disseminating it without proper permissions.

It hasn't killed us....

infact I suggest you head over to the Neo900 subforum and take a reaaaallll good read .
It is the next maemo device line....open...much...much more open...and at least 2wice as powerful as the n900..
and your new n900 purchase puts you in a great position to think about buying the neo900 motherboard...when it comes out this Q3 - Q4 and taking out your n900 board and quickly inserting the new motherboard.
Bingo-bango-bongo.
