New to N900/Maemo in 2014? Some years after Nokia has dropped all it's Smartphone development and the Maemo community slightly vanishes? Wow...

Did I miss something?

As you are knew here before trying anything learn how to flash you device. After that you can play with many things like Kernel Power, CSSU. And if you need anything just use search instead of creating a thread for it.

And welcome to this community.

Welcome to the endlessly fun toy that is the N900!

As this is a very open machine, there are many, many ways to use this device to its fullest. Personally, I'm still using the stock kernel and PR1.3.1 release of Maemo. :) (I'm still having way too much fun writing apps for the thing to bother with keeping up with the CSSU folks.)

But yes, there have been many good updates since the untimely death of Nokia. If you want a quick and easy summary of many of the best updates, here's a good link to get you started:

Edit: oops, gianko beat me to it. :)

Further to the perfect setup guidance, if you intend to use it the calendaring capabilities at all, install Qalendar forthwith. It uses the built in calendar engine's capabilities far more comprehensively than the stock interface. You may also want to look at the wikilinks in my sig; the second one particularly if you intend to use the browser much - I find the final method on the page makes using the browser much more palatable.

Quick reply...

Nobody mentioned MyPaint yet?.. Warning: do not forget a screen protector ;-) Drawing-painting a lot, using stylus, or playing with sand, screen protector is going to be helpful.

If you are looking for a battery, Polarcell is best.

If you want to know what your battery charge is, bnf is your friend.

espeak is great. If you need Navigation, there are Modrana, Navit, Marble, and even voice navigation in default-Nokia's-maps.

In short... Look at my signature :-)

Best wishes.

[EDIT]
Be careful with microUSB port! Do not break it...
