Google Earth's third party support is shutting down

So, does this mean that many great apps using google map services in N900, N9 and Jolla will stop working, right?

http://www.engadget.com/2014/12/15/g...rt-going-away/

It is really, really sad.

I am using several apps that to my understand are using Google earths services. EasyStreet view, Meego/Jollaopas, Omat pysäkit to name a few... Actually majority on any programs giving you public info somehow related to maps seem to be affected. Or is google maps a totally different api? I hope I am greatly wrong. Of course services like OpenStreet maps are there, but how many old apps will be updated, I wonder...

Will this closure also effect modrana?

Am I wrong to assume that Google Earth does not mean Google Maps support?

Looks like modRana is not using any of these APIs, so there should not be any issues this time. :)

Still, knowing Google, it is only a matter of time until they break one of the APIs modRana actually is using. :) For example both the local search and routing APIs already had to be fixed/switched once.

Anyway of switching to something other than Google API's?

Yeah, an offline routing with auto-rerouting would be kewl ;)

One reason more to avoid huge companies and their proprietary services....
