Backlight problem

Sometimes after using the 770 for a while, the backlight will just switch off. Or actually, not completely off, it still glows but is extremely dim. It usually starts working again if I leave it for a while.

Has anyone else had a problem like this?

I dont know if you mean the feature or not.

But the screen has 3 states: 1. Full visibility 2. A little bit dimmer version 3. Completely off.

You can adjust those from control panel --> Display (or something like that).

No, this isn't the normal screen dimming feature. The backlight goes so dark, you can only see it in a room with no lights, and the screen is still too dark to read. The 770 seems to be fully responsive, but the backlight doesn't just get enough power.

I think I know what you are talking about...but I think that is the suspend mode. After the light dims...it shuts off the screen until you touch it again. During this stage you can make out an image. I notice this when you turn off the unit sometimes you see the word "nokia" on there for a good 10 seconds before it fades out completely.

I'm not sure it is the suspend mode. The backlight doesnt come back up even when I tap the screen or press the hardware keys. It seems more like an hardware problem.

I think you've answered your own question.

Sounds like hardware to me too.

good luck,

I'm not sure how dim 'dim' is, (ie the 'suspend' version of dim or the inactivity version) but it almost sounds to me like the 770's forgetting it's received input and puts you into the power saving mode where the screen dims after 5 mins.

Have you reflashed?

(I've also experienced the ultra dim 'Nokia' logo once before... popping the battery and rebooting solved the issue)

I've updated it once, not to the latest image though, as people have been having some problems with that one.

Yesterday, the backlight went out again. I'm pretty much certain now that it is a hardware problem, as even rebooting would not fix it. I switched off the lights and in the dark I noticed that the screen is flickering slightly. Tapping the backside a few times brought the backlight on. I will probably send the 770 in for repairs.
