Terminal connection to Nokia 770 via usb?

Hello,

I have a Nokia770. I wonder if there is any way to make it host and make a client computer connect it via xterminal (or whatever suitable terminal, protocol, client...) using the usb cable? I have an old casio laptop running w98se, it is very small and convenient to carry while traveling for short vacations, but it does not have support for recent wi-fi adaptors and the system itself is not safe to go online as linux is... So, I wonder if there is a way to connect my old laptop to my Nokia 770 via usb cable and share Nokia's connection to the connected laptop, preferably want to make a client connection to Nokia via a xterminal program running on laptop, if possible...

If anyone have an idea if this is possible please send a reply and explain simply if possible :)

Regards,
Alp

If anybody has directions for doing it the other way around, could you post that too? I'm getting an n800 in a couple weeks (I can't wait!), but the software company I work in doesn't have wireless access for security reasons...

nokia tablet can act as usb network card, see http://maemo.org/community/wiki/usbnetworkingwinxp/

The biggest problem is windows 98. Most likely there is no USB RNDIS drivers for windows 98.

There is unofficial windows 2000 usb stack that works on 98, but it is targeted at usb mass storage so available RNDIS drivers for W2K may not run, see

fanoush: great article! thanks for the link. I have a Windows XP sp2 desktop that I'd like to share the network connection from TO my Nokia N800 (since I don't have a wireless AP in my office, but would like my Nokia N800 to get Ethernet-via-USB).

I installed Nokia770 USB Ethernet RNDIS.inf so that my WinXP RNDIS recognizes the N800, but now I'm looking for maemo-statusbar-usbnet so that I can toggle between Mass Storage and Ethernet from the statusbar on the N800. Since I don't have wireless here, I'm downloading packages manually the Maemo Bora Free Repositoryfrom: http://repository.maemo.org/pool/bora/free/binary/
...but I get "(i) Unable to install. Incompatible application package." each time I attempt to "Install from File" under Application Manager.

How do I install maemo-statusbar-usbnet for use on an updated Nokia N800?

either enable red-pill mode in application manager (not recommended) or do it from shell as root.
Code:

dpkg -i /path/to/maemo-statusbar-usbnet_0.6-1_armel.deb

Use:
dpkg -i /path/to/maemo-statusbar-usbnet_0.6-1_armel.deb
*THAT* worked perfectly! :D My Windows XP desktop detected it as "Nokia N770 Ethernet/RNDIS" using the .INF file. It's now sharing its ethernet connection to my Nokia N800, which shows up as 192.168.2.15 as it's IP address. "Maemo DM" now shows up under my Control Panel | Extras, allowing me to toggle between MMC and UsbNet. I'm a very happy camper, again. :p

So there's some packages that won't install under Application Manager (going so far as "Incompatible package", but will install just fine from "dpkg -i" as root? ...Hmm, I'll have to remember that.

Thanks, fanoush!
