What is SONAR application ?

I have found application called SONAR by Mobius Group. It is available to download and install from Fremantle Extras-devel free armel. Description is as follows "Not safe for general use. Proximity-based localization app developed by the Mobius Group part of CS @ University of Illinois - Urbana". Can anybody write me what is this application for? How to use it and why it is not safe for general use ?

The best bet would have been to ask the developers themselves what their application is for as they are in better position to answer that. And I think knowing what the app is and probably the risks it poses to your system prior to installing it is the safest thing you could do

I have thought that asking people who might have been using this application would be a better way.

From a very quick look at the source (it's python anyway) seems like if uses WLAN ad-hoc mode to estimate the distance (and perhaps from there the relative location as well) between phones.

I know there was also a script that used the N900's speaker and microphone to estimate the distance to objects - actual sonar. I can't find the thread though, if anyone can please point me to it!

The N900 and rest of N-Linux series have an amazing array of real hacker code lying around in and out of the repos, not unlike the Linux Zaurus before it it is the only high end hardware mobile device which ships ready for console and root.
There will again be great linux stuff as the Android kernel mainstreams and alternate or OEM firmware(like Cyanogenmod now on oneplus) ships on great devices. We will as always be missing open source drivers but for causal users a hackable device is all they really want.

Could you describe it closely? How to use it? Is it safe?

Well, even the driver situation might be finally improving, at least a bit - for example Sony mentions working on the Freedreno open source driver for the Adreno mobile GPUs in their recent Kernel mainlining announcement. :)

Wow, that is unexpected. Wifi or even sound you see someone reverse engineering, but to have a truly secure device a GPU, aka a powerful alternate processor, needs to have an open source driver.

Honestly it has been a continuing shock to me over my lifetime that we exist in a timeline which has that unlikely thing like an open Internet or good FOSS operating systems and software considering how much lowest common denominator greed seems to control so much of the rest of our lives.
