Amazon selling reconditioned N800's?

Well, after less than a week, my N800 has gone back to Amazon :-(

I called the Nokia helpline, and they went through the normal procedure of removing the battery, re-installing it and trying to power up. She then took the WLAN number and asked me where I had purchased it from, and how much I had paid for it. I told them it had come from Amazon for around $360. She said this did not suprise her as they had been receiving lots of calls from people who had bought their N800 from Amazon, and she thought that most of these units were reconditioned and repackaged. I pointed out that the box had a Nokia holographic seal on it when delivered, and she simply said that the repackaging was very good. She said that the official Nokia units were sold with a 256MB memory card and asked if any card was supplied with my unit, and I said yes, it was a Nokia mini-SD of 128MB capacity. She then offered to either supply me another unit direct from Nokia at $400, or take mine in for repair. Both of which I declined. So its gone back to Amazon.

I am curious to know if this is just Nokia pulling a fast one to try and sell more units, or if there are other people on this forum who have had trouble with N800's purchased from Amazon.

Best Regards,

Paul

Interesting that she claimed the official Nokia units are sold with 256MB memory cards when the Nokia website lists the standard sales package contents as containing a 128MB card. See:

That's a new one on me, too. You'd think Nokia rep would know their own products. Also wanted to point out that just because you bought it from Amazon doesn't necessarily mean it came from Amazon. Amazon is often just a storefront for the actual merchants selling the product, so you may want to look and see if it actually shipped from Amazon. I don't know if Amazon will take any action against a third party reseller if they are indeed passing off reconditioned goods, but I think it's worth investigating.

Sometimes on-the-fly substitutions are made, especially as memory prices drop and/or supplies for a larger size are excessive. Typically a flyer is inserted into the package informing the purchaser of the change. Nothing wrong or extraordinary in that.
