It works beautifully in your own home network. However, I was NOT able to make it work outside my home network, say from my office or travelling. After 2 months, I finally made it. DO NOT ATTEMPT IF YOU DO NOT UNDERSTAND, THIS WILL OPEN YOUR NETWORK TO THE WHOLE WORLD. Follow at your OWN risks. Follow the above link, to get you going in your own home network. When outside your home network, say, in your office, access through "youripaddress:41952/mediabrowse/lib/". Get your IP address from www.whatismyip.com or go to your router admin page, whatever, stick in your ip address and the listening port"41952", bam, you got access to your music library at home! Youripaddress is the ip address that go to your router, not the 192.168.*.*. WARNING: YOU ARE OPENING YOUR NETWORK TO THE WORLD, follow at your OWN RISKS. There are several other ways to secure the access, however, it is slightly involved at my level for the time being. Maybe some of the senior guru has suggestions? Please.........

Yup. Ty's been throwing down these kind of tips for some time now. Not to detract from your work though, bun. It's admirable you've been able to track down these solutions on your own, but you really ought to watch the forums more closely so we don't end up with duplicate (or virtually so) posts.

Well, now I have two posters who have done good work that I admired ganged up on me, umm...........

I humblely disagree on all charges :)

Firstly, I am aware of Ty's work that posted on 9/4/07 and was about to try out to compare to my own that posted on 7/17/07, "I wrote this up a long time ago...", but was intimidated by the Ubuntu box that I am still trying to build today.
Secondly, I am using TVersity and materials that are more readily available for the "PC users" and people can just jump right in.
Finally, I looked at Ty's instructions, which included info similar to other streaming info, that did not emphasize about there are actually two IP addresses, and that is most people got stucked with (a lot of info floating around put in 192.168.*.* will get you streamed etc). The reason for today's post is to try to correct for the "uninitiated" (that is me, me, me) that using the wrong ip address will get you nowhere. I did give Ty credit for instruction item 7, not like most other people, just bluff it off by saying ip:listening port.

Now, even I re-read Ty's work, I cannot try out, cause my Ubuntu box is not ready. This demonstrated that Ty's approach and my approach are different, and HeebieJeebie is actually speaks for yourself, "you really ought to watch the forums more closely so we don't end up with duplicate (or virtually so) posts.". I think writing step by step or contributing to some new ideas would be more useful than an editing comment, and even worst, the comment is in fact blatantly wrong. I will stop right at this post.:mad:




Well, how about some helps for the other topics? please? I still stuck on trying to get VNC/rdesktop over the inet. I get them ok within my own network, no problem. Any thought? I have read the Micro$oft's instructions, page to page several times and gets nowhere. Maybe I should put this down and go back to continue building my Ubuntu box.............:(

Most people have no idea what an IP addres is, anyway, much less if I tell them they have two to worry about. The instructions are very simple though, requiring no knowledge of what those strange numbers might be. And I don't particularly like the method you used because TVersity is not too great a piece of software, not to mention that most UPnP stuff takes up a crapload of bandwidth because it is sending out a lot more stuff than just the song your listening too (Which the IT doesn't need), which isn't a problem on a local network, but if someone has a bandwidth cap, it's a big problem. Even if not, your cable provider might see that annd wonder why you have been sending copyrighted music over the internet to someone at another IP addres ;)

Eh, but, as far as Windows software is concerned, this could be pretty useful (Cause most Microsoft stuff sucks worse anyway).

It's good info to have, could you just organize a little better for people? Anyone not familiar with the computer world (99 percent of Windows users) would have no idea what your talking about.

I looked at your blog, and looked my so called "step to step", there is no comparison, your is well organized and complete. I will try to measure up to you in the future. I do not know, though, how to make it pretty on this forum, formatting remains a foreign lang to me, but, I will keep trying, and your suggestions are well taken.

Oop, another thing, the reason I am dragging my feet on the Ubuntu box, apparantly, the Ubuntu box will take over the laptop, i.e., they do not dual boot, instead, ubuntu wipes out the window. I am trying to learn how to do dual boot, as I am not wholeheartly converted to Debian yet, maybe in the future. In particular, if the Ubuntu CD wiped the MBR from the laptop, I would not be able to use the laptop restore disk, which contains, the video/audio/USB drivers which have been all extincted from their respective company. Do you know, the Ubuntu CD allows dual boot on a win XP box, by any chance?

Meh, I just use dyndns.org and a static IP address in my NAT LAN.
Much easier and safer than opening up your entire NAT LAN to the public.

Eh, but, Bun,

if MBR is knocked off, it is of no great importance as long as you don't happen to break your floppy and optical drive at the same time. The master boot record is on the hard drive, it has nothing to do with the BIOS. Grub or Ntldr is on the MBR, which can be easily replaced with a live CD.

I suggest you download the Gutsy Gibbon. It's installer is wonderful and dual-boot (shrinking the Windows parition) can be done automagically. :)

But, the Windows Migration Assistant and the dual-boot/partitioning auto configurator are already availble in the more stable Feisty Fawn, too.

If you are running Linux on your home machine, another thing you might try is using sshfs and a domain you've set up at DynDNS.org. Then mount your music to some convenient folder on your Nokia. Then you don't need to run a web server and you can open your files from the audio player or from file manager.

It was fairly easy to set up on my Ubuntu box, as I had already set up ssh and I was accessing my music and other files offsite anyway. I think I had to set up becomeroot, xterm and openssh on the Nokia before I could set up sshfs.

I can stream music to the Nokia very well this way, use playlists, etc.
