New Open Sourced Qtopia on Nokia Internet Tablets?
I have recently seen great news from the QT world, QTopia is open sourced!!!
http://www.linuxdevices.com/news/NS5429713730.html http://trolltech.com/company/newsroo...-17.9260755578 So I was wondering how much time we should wait until QTopia will run on our much appreciated Internet Tablets! You may be asking your self why we need QTopia on the Nokias N___ IT, well, I was a proud user of a Sharp Zaurus before acquiring my Nokia, and although Nokia has done a wonderful job with Maemo, I miss some functionality and apps from the QTopia ecosystem. There are thousand of old-QTopia applications that could be easily ported to the new, speedy, beautiful, easy-to-code version!!! If I can finally get it running in my Nokia I will say bye bye to carry my laptop every day :) It was a really nice movement from trolltech and I hope we can also see it running in the old Sharp Zaurus, many people will be really satisfied to hear this news :) |

Ditto. Loved my Sharp Zaurus. Had the 860, still use it for some things, and it was the ease of wifi connection that drove my discovery of the N800 (which, as I've seen on other posts and will verify) wasn't particularly well advertised and was a surprise to me. After the Zaurus I wanted another Linux-based device. Have owned the N800 for only six weeks, love its functionality as a media-consumption device, but have also added as much Maemo software as I've been able. Love the 800. Will love it even more as software offerings mature.

I still have to carry my C-1000 with all times on account of the information contained in those oh so useful apps. The dearth of oh so useful apps is a big bugbear with the N800.
So this is great news indeed if it makes it easier for Zaurus software to be ported over. |

Hi, is there any skilled developper who wants to try to get QTopia in the Nokia IT? :)

Ugh. I finally find a Linux UI that I like, and people want to get rid of it!? :-(
Though, having the apps ported would be nice. |

HI,
Qtopia and qtjambi: Is that the answere for Java-developers, who want to develop for the N800 I like maemo, but I 'm really disapointed, how long it takes, to bring java to maemo Moin flens |

I agree, someone please make this possible!

that way maybe someone will make something like them, as they can see the use of it for themselves. but being vague about it helps no-one. its always a bit annoying when people talk about some feature or other that they miss, but never list what that is. or that say that they need app X to do their stuff, but never list exactly what it is that app X does that they need. |
Re: New Open Sourced Qtopia on Nokia Internet Tablets?
qt/qtopia v2 and v1 have been GPL for a long time, there's been nothing to stop you porting them to the N800. You could even use x/qt and get qt/qtopia apps AND x11 apps to run at the same time.
the news here is that qt core 4 (what would previously have been qt-embedded) and qt phone edition have been GPLd, which means much better source compatibility with linux desktop apps plus access to some interesting new applications previously only available to commercial buyers of trolltech's SDK. |
