Nokia repair center not honoring COMPUSA purchase

I just sent a 770 in for repair of the WSOD. Unit was purchased in Oct. of '06. Made a copy of the receipt and sent it in for repair. I got a letter in the mail stating "We have received your phone for repair and determined that your phone has an expired warranty. A copy of a valid proof of purchase (receipt) dated within one year may be submitted to place the unit in warranty. A valid proof of purchase must include the the serial # (ESN/IMEI). seller's name, address, and phone number." WTF. Compusa or anywhere for that matter doesn't put the serial number on a receipt. I guess it doesn't help that the COMPUSA that I purchased it from has since shut down. I'm calling 1st thing Monday morning. I can't believe this. Oh and the price to repair.........$175 + $8 shipping. Anybody else run into this?

Ouch.

Perhaps a receipt w/o number will be OK. But at $175 to repair, couldn't you just buy another one? How much are they new?

That's the thing, no reciept that I have gotten from Compusa has had the serial number for an item. And the repair place already has the copy of my receipt. They don't sell the 770's new any more but one could be had from ebay for about $125 easily.

I would try submitting the receipt with the serial number in a separate letter.

I'd point out to Nokia in fairly strong terms that the WSOD is a well-known manufacturing/design defect with the 770, and that even outside the standard warranty they have a duty to fix it.

In the UK, in fact, they'd have a legal responsibility to (actually, your retailer would, but that's probably not an option if it's closed) under the Sales of Goods Act.

Before the CompUSA near us went out of business I bought many items there with the serial number on the receipt. I believe it was scanned as part of, or in addition to, the upc code.

Talked to a CompUSA rep who told me they started doing that with most items because people would return items as a form of warranty. They would buy a new one and box up the old one. During a return they were instructed to open the box and check the serial number with the one on the outside of the box and the receipt.

Interesting that your 770 didn't have one.

Good luck with Nokia.

To update you all: I called the repair center and told them that my receipt didn't have the serial number on it. She says that it should have and they can't fix it under warranty without it. So I call Compusa and they tell me that unless it is a computer, it should not have the ESN on the receipt. She actually pulled up my receipt and it didn't have it on their records as well. She is going to send me a copy of my receipt on letterhead stating that the ESN wouldn't be on the receipt. She was supposed to fax it but I never received it (after 4 attempts and 2 different fax numbers). She mailing it. I don't know if it's was a glitch in Compusa's system. I did buy it while they were going out of business so that may have alot to do with it. I talked to Nokia and they said that if Compusa sends something stating that they sold me a 770 with that ESN on it, they would except it. But Compusa says that they can't say that because they don't show the ESN. We'll see.

Telecommunication giant Nokia was established in Nokia, its namesake. The now billion-dollar company was founded by Fredrik Idestam in 1865 as a pulp mill for manufacturing paper.

Uhhh...maybe they should return to their core business since pulp generally doesn't require must after sales support!!! LOL!
