For offline maps, you need software that do cache of tiles. Try cloudgps, mappero, modrana or advanced geocaching tool

I started to use the N900 again after one year, upgraded to latest cssu stable 21.2011.38-1Smaemo8 (10.06.2016) but no A-gps fix with supl.nokia.com , certificate expired ?

Navit team switched from autotools to cmake. They managed to build with cmake for maemo too! Is the latest version with Cairo and It's finally available in maemo extras-dev repos!

yes, there is a qml gui but the devs seems to stop the support or is buggy. anyway you can find and try the qt and qml packages from bokomoko.
