Thanks for the latest update, much appreciated – as is MeeFox in general. I particularly welcome the volume controls and kill timer thing.

Well, I have found turning the color profile to subdued helps a bit. Using FBReader with moderately bright text on black background works pretty well for ebooks.

Emumaster should play sound. I just checked; it does for me.

Have you tried the simple stuff – like turning up the volume and making sure audio is enabled (in the emumasters settings).
