Can't say if you won't have any trouble, but I have no problems with either my N800 and N810 with the latest community SSUs.
Maybe you should restart with a clean Nokia image and upgrade from...

Thankfully, my touchscreen functionality has (intermittently) returned, so I was able to install usbcontrol.

Nope, I get the shrunken telescoped view of my open apps. Maybe your further advice would work if I wasn't using Telescope. :(

Nope. The browser shrinks to telescoped view. No quick taskbar pop-up.
If I do a longer press on the home key I get the home screen displayed. Still no access to the application menu.

Nope. The pressing the escape key after 2x the home key still has me staring at the home screen. No application menu access.

Trouble is, you can't install the ssh server without a BT keyboard running first, and you can't activate that without access to the control panel ... :(

Duplicate Processes?
This may be a coincidence, but since installing the Community SSU, when I enter "ps" in X Terminal, I see duplicate entries for most processes (with separate pids) e.g.
1523 user 1452 SW...
