Re: Asus EeePC 900 Netbook on Woot for $149
If you have the time to watch the Dell Outlet (the official Dell refurb site) like a hawk, you can find better deals than this on the Dell Mini 9, which has an Atom CPU. If you don't have the time,...

Re: Video questions
Install Mplayer.
It can't play high res and/or h.264/AVC video well, but it'll play more modest videos in a myriad of formats.

Re: Just a thought - A 7" Nokia MID?
Definitely interesting, although it'll almost certainly be less capable and more expensive than they promise, like most gadgets.
A couple changes that I'd make: I'd add a OLPC-like handle...

Re: Just a thought - A 7" Nokia MID?
I'd love a large (7" screen or bigger) tablet with 2 full-size USB ports, 2 full-size SD slots and video out (maybe composite + HDMI). And the killer feature would be the incredible battery life, far...

Re: View large pictures
But the entire decompressed image doesn't necessarily need to be held in memory.
If you had a clever image viewer, optimized for low RAM use, you could just decode the part of the image that you...

Re: Nintendo DS emulator
Since the DS screens are only each 256 x 192, both could be displayed comfortably on a tablet's single screen. Now, I don't think a DS emulator will ever run at a playable speed on the current...

Re: Manually mounting usb HDD
Make sure both the mount point and device exist first. Run "ls /dev/sda1 /media/usb" in a terminal if you're unsure.

Re: Uses for an N800
Photo frame? The N800's big, high-res screen makes it an excellent photo viewer. And it's more portable than your netbook.

Re: Shell missing od command?
A regular Linux system will use Bash for the shell, and the GNU coreutils package provides most of the common utilities (including od). The tablets use the lightweight BusyBox instead of a typical...

Re: VCR Replacements after 02/17/09?
A TiVo HD won't be nearly as capable as a HTPC (Home Theater PC), but they're only $250 plus $13/month and have 2 tuners. And they can use CableCards to receive digital cable, which MythTV will...

Re: Change settings for Video Playback in Mplayer
qole mentioned the "-lavdopts lowres=1" command-line flag above. It can do wonders for playback smoothness, at the expense of visual quality.
You can add a line like "lavdopts=lowres=1,400" to...

Re: how to conserve batter power
The logic behind the advice to "leave the tablet on" is the fact that booting is a energy-intensive process and the tablets should be quite efficient when on but idle.
I don't have any testing...

Re: Corrupted external card?? But not really...
The N810 might just be more picky when it comes to filesystem errors than Windows XP.
Try running a full filesystem check and repair, either on the N810 (with the fsck.vfat utility) or from your...

I'm happy your problem resolved itself. If you run into a similar problem on a Linux system in the future, try the lsof terminal utility.

Re: 8GB SDHC Flash Card Experience
I bought a 16GB Transcend SD card for my N800, which died shortly after. I sent it back, and its replacement died just as quickly. In both cases it seemed to be hardware fault, not just a corrupt...
