Yes, you need root for TB to work, but I think there's an app called Carbon that backs up apps without root but it needs a PC to do that.

If anyone is still interested in this, I made an Android app that can send anything over Android Beam (Jelly Bean / 4.1+ only).
Just tap the share button and select Beam File....

If it's a generic NFC tag it should work fine, why not buy some plain NFC tags? Usually stuff that's branded is more expensive, and with NFC tags it really doesn't matter (unless we're talking bytes)

While the S3 is a great device, the 1GB RAM (actually 850-ish, rest is reserved) it packs is way too little.
TouchWiz is huge, it's not that effecient, if you flash a stock AOSP/AOKP/CyanogenMod...
