I dunno what other people did. But I connected my phone to the wall socket and then turned it on..I haven't experienced any issues.
It does actually say in the manual that it is partially charged...

Pleased with mine.. Haven't found any faults..Installed a few apps including firefox.. I really like the browser(s).. I love the fact that it has SSH.. Easily able to connect to my various servers......
