Try flashing your eMMC (http://wiki.maemo.org/Updating_the_tablet_firmware#Flashing_the_eMMC_in_the_N900) too. Just remember that it deletes all your data (images, videos, backups etc.).

I guess you could contact them about a Maemo port but it's probably highly unlikely that they do one. I think your best chance is to install nitdroid and try if the application works on it.

The user experience isnt probably going to be as good as N9 because the UI can be a bit unresponsive sometimes (especially on devices that aren't overclocked). If you don't mind about that though...

The applications don't rotate because they don't support portrait mode. Try enabling forced rotation if you want every application to rotate but some of them might have problems in portrait mode.

Sounds like a hardware problem in my opinion. Try pressing the headphone connector as deep inside the phone as you can to make sure its properly connected.
