sudo apt-get install rubygems1.8

this began installing dependencies and in the process broke with a "cannot find ldconfig in path" error. So apt-get is now unable to run because dpkg is broken....

LXDE is functional after the update but the new image broke the apt repository. I can't install packages cause ldconfig and locales are uninstallable. This sounds like a broken base-system issue.

Never mind, I just noticed Julio put up a source package too! I'm familiar with the Debian development process so I'll pick up some work on this app, as my first Maemo app was going to be a 4sq one ...
